Pheasant Hunting

How can I purchase my South Dakota pheasant hunting license?

You can purchase your non-resident small game hunting license on-line using this link:

http://www.sdgfp.info/Index.htm

Otherwise, you can purchase any non-resident small game license at Cabela’s retail store in Mitchell, SD or most convenience stores. Licenses are readily available.

Concerning availability, how soon should my group reserve a hunt with Dakota Wingshooting Paradise-LLC?

We strongly recommend early reservations. Due to our 98% re-booking rate among return guests, our prime-season dates are generally filled by July 1st, yearly. However, we do have a substantial number of acres, therefore it is always best to contact one of our staff to check date availability. Reservations of 11 to 12 months in-advance of hunting season in South Dakota are common; however we can accept your reservations at your earliest convenience.

Are guests of DWP allowed to bring their own hunting dogs?

YES! We not only allow it, we encourage it! All we ask is that each dog not range farther than 30 yards in front of the shooters during your South Dakota pheasant hunts. We also ask that each dog be fully-controllable using voice commands or electronic collars. We DO NOT allow hawk screamer, beeper, or similar collars on the property. Our 100% guarantee does not apply to groups with un-controllable hunting dogs, or ranging dogs.

Are all hunts guided at DWP?

Yes. All hunts are fully guided by a member of our Pro-Staff Guide Team. This is a direct benefit to our guests because our staff provides all the necessary gear and experience that is expected by our guests. Safety is strictly enforced. Our company name & brand are directly associated with each and every hunt, and we make certain all of our guests needs are fulfilled.

What type of habitats do you hunt? Are they easily navigated?

Dakota Wingshooting Paradise is a full-time pheasant hunting operation. We have farm managers and habitat consultants that work through-out the spring and summer months, setting up the fields for anyone, young or aged, to hunt. The fields are all stripped, and groomed to allow any size group to hunt. We have extremely large fields to medium sized fields, for use.

We have older hunters in our group that are unable to walk long distances, how do they hunt?

Of course as with any type of hunting, our pheasant hunting operation does require some mobility on a daily basis, however we do utilize blocking positions in our fields, that would not require much, if any, walking.

Does Dakota Wingshooting Paradise have airport shuttle services or van rentals for my group?

Yes. DWP has a on-call driver scheduled daily for our guests shuttle needs. We also have several 15 passenger vans for rent, which is common among our larger groups. Please contact one of our staff to check van shuttle service and rental availability.

Does our group require a rental car?

Yes. More than likely, your group will want to experience the city, go for dinner, etc. When you arrive at DWP, we have parking areas for your personal vehicles. During the hunt, we will use our 4x4 buses and shuttle trucks for transporting your group.

During my hunt, what can we expect as far as bird numbers?

Over that last 20 years, only a handful of our guests have returned home “with-out” limiting out every day. Of course, your shooting experience may play a substantial role in your hunt. Pre-planning, such as practicing at your local sporting clays range is a great idea. However, you will be amazed at the number of roosters/hens you will see in one day at DWP. Most guests tell us they have seen more birds “In One Day” at Dakota Wingshooting Paradise, than they have seen in 25 years of hunting! We are extremely confident in our pheasant hunting operation, and hope you will feel the same way after your experience with us.

Is the hunting challenging for an experience wingshooter?

We refer to our wild birds as the “Fire in the Sky”…..or as “Prairie Rockets”…..
Many guests of Dakota Wingshooting Paradise shoot more than 25 rounds for 3 birds! This in itself makes a strong statement about our birds, yes they flat out move! These birds are built for speed, and with the constant South Dakota winds, they are more than a challenge to hunt. The old verbiage about bringing 3 shells for 3 birds does not work here, period! At Dakota Wingshooting Paradise it’s not “if” you going to miss, the question is “how many times” are you going to miss?

What size shotgun and shells/choke is recommended?

The favorite gun for use would definitely be the 12 gauge. Semi-automatic, pump, or over-under whichever your most comfortable using.

12 gauge shotguns coupled with a modified to full choke (late season), is premium. The required shot size at DWP is: #6--#5--#4, no shells above #6. DWP recommend’s #6 thru #5 lead shot- 2 ¾ inch shells during early to mid-season & #4 thru #2 shot, thru late season.

20 gauge also works well, however with this pheasants we ask that 20 gauge users bring 3 inch shells- using 2 thru 4 shot-lead. This seems to work very well. Please remember these birds are very resilient and extremely capable of withstanding a shot to the side, so we ask that your guests are prepared to hunt the most challenging game birds in South Dakota!
